Investing in People and skills.
It is challenging in a start up business to have the resources to fully invest in people and skills when the biggest growth in skills is coming from the top. With the need to immerse myself in business fully for the first time I have become a member of the AOCA, MTA, MCOC and worked with Gary Pauley through the business mentors programme.
Having worked with Brian Keen, much of our systems and processes are becoming clearer and documented so as to allow the training of staff much as a bigger franchise operation would. Currently all staff training is handled by me.
It is heartening to have poached a staff member from a department store and taught them a large number of workshop skills. This staff member now has the confidence as an adult to enter an apprenticeship programme and is training to become a qualified mechanic.
Chloe is a well trained and energetic mechanic who adds yet another point of difference to our business. We are proud to have someone of her skills and talent on the staff and hope she can stay on as she considers extending her visa and even applying for residency. Finding good qualified staff is one of our biggest headaches and it is important we keep hold of the good ones when they turn up.
We rely quite heavily on professionals around us. We work with SideKick Tasman our accountants and also Gascoine Wicks as our legal partners.
